History
(Porongos, 1809-Montevideo, 1868) Militar y político uruguayo. Luchó en la guerra Grande contra Oribe y Rosas (1843-1851) y, al renunciar al Gobierno Juan F. Giró (1853), formó un triunvirato con Rivera y Lavalleja. Elegido presidente, fue obligado a dimitir en 1855. Después de casi dos años de guerra civil recuperó el poder en 1865. Murió asesinado.
